MasterChugs Theater: ‘Ringu’

Asian horror month at MasterChugs Theater continues this week with the movie that most probably brought the very genre of Asian horror to the forefront: Ringu. Before there was The Ring, there was Ringu, the Japanese horror/thriller that was remade virtually verbatim from this original. Of course, it’s a little less Hollywood-shiny, a little less in-your-face-scary, and a lot more subtitled. But the guts are the same: an unlabeled videotape is making the rounds … watch it, and you die in one week’s time. A skeptic television station employee discovers the tape after her cousin watches it and dies, watches it herself, and soon draws her ex-husband and nephew into the quest to find out more about the tape’s origins and, hopefully, avoid death for all three of them.

Deal of the Day

Here in the U.S. it’s no secret that the housing bubble has burst. People just aren’t buying houses like they were before. Perhaps it’s because they cost too much for a first-time home buyer without taking out an 80-year mortgage.

Still awake? Good.

Fear not, potential home buyers, you can put away that small fortune you were preparing. Just move to the Ivory Coast. There, they are giving away homes to workers who show up on time.

Cosmonauts pack, too?!?!

Space exploration a la American has been boring for its entire history: tests, exploratory probes, an occasional man on the moon, growing plants in zero-G. Oh yeah, and the lady astronauts are crazy stalkers. There is no reason to want to become an astronaut, which is probably why NASA has started recruiting online.

The Russian cosmonaut is pretty much the improbable offspring of Han Solo and Captain Kirk: they get vodka rations, probably smoke because that’s what movies say Europeans do and–as The Telegraph reports–carry awesome space guns.

Key Quote: The unique pistol has three barrels which fire hunting rounds as well as rifle bullets and signal flares. Its butt serves as a machete and a spade.

Anyone familiar with my work for Whim knows that I want to be a cosmonaut, and you can help that dream come true. Log in to Facebook and join this group. I promise that if you help me, I will become enough of a media nuisance to make space exploration as awesome as Firefly meant it to be.
