Eat My Sports: On a McGwire

Maybe I’m too numb to the whole steroids issue now. Maybe the past 10 years of scrutiny have gotten me to the point where I literally don’t care. Maybe I am willing to overlook things now because its being revealed how common steroids were, but at any rate I’m supporting Mark McGwire, and you should too.

Do any of you even remember why you care about baseball now? It sure as hell isn’t because the Yankees won the World Series or that Randy Johnson got his 300th career win at age 7,892 as a member of the Giants. Were their fingers broken?

A bunch of people stood around in front of Edgar Allen Poe’s house Sunday night and were disappointed that the “Poe Toaster” did not show. The Toaster has annually left roses and a bottle of Cognac at the poet’s original grave site since 1949.

But, when the Toaster did not show, the spectators stood around complaining that they traveled, some even flying, for a no-show. Even the curator of the Poe House, Jeff Jerome, complained, saying there will be no roses or Cognac on display for the weekend following Poe’s birthday.

“I was very annoyed,” Jerome said.

Added one person from Chicago: “It’s really sad that the ritual was broken.”

And so, at the end of the night, no one made the effort to–oh, I don’t know–call a florist and run to the goddamn liquor store?!

It’s well established that standards for sexual attractiveness in men and women differ, and would seem to have done so well along the way back down the evolutionary chain; an older, established male has a stronger troupe, while younger females have more breeding years in them.

In New Zealand, it just means that older women tend to fly a lot more.

Tastes like chicken … and science

Since 2006, Dutch scientists have been growing pork from pig stem cells, and they are only now letting us in on this awesomeness. Apparently, you can make decent tasting food from stem cells, the only thing is that the texture is off. They say this could one day help win the war against hunger around the world.

But let’s take a step back for a moment. Science wants to use human stem cells under the guise of trying to cure diseases like Michael J. Fox Disease. But really, if pig stem cells can grow pork, who’s to say that human stem cells won’t be used to make human meat to feed the ever-growing masses?
