In 1996, rapper Tupac Shakur was killed in a dive-by on the Las Vegas strip. Or did he? In the years that followed, some fans had conspiracy theories that Shakur faked his death, and was really out there, alive and living it up somewhere remote. Fans pointed to the years of new material that the record companies kept releasing, as well as his stage name on his final release before his death, Makaveli, which is similar to Nicolo Machiavelli, who faked his own death to escape his enemies. (The letters can also be rearranged to spell “am alive.” Spooky!)
Conspiracy theories refused to die, even if Shakur did. And then, all of a sudden, it seemed like we all accepted that he was actually murdered and that was that. And then came Coachella. A holographic version of Tupac Shakur performed twice at the music festival with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.
