Eat My Sports: So, how about that NBA trade deadline?

Like many of you, the NFL season is the highlight of my year in sports. The beginning of the season also runs about the same time as the MLB postseason, so that’s really about as good as it gets. Then, after the NFL calendar runs it’s course, we end up here in the sports dead zone. The holidays are done as you’ve finally assessed the damage after Valentine’s Day reared it’s ugly head six weeks after Christmas and you are either training your liver for St. Patrick’s Day, or finally cleansing your body of everything you’ve managed to d as o to it since Thanksgiving.

This leaves me with not a lot to talk about as I don’t care about the NHL and the NBA still has well over four months to go. But what the hell, let’s talk about the impending trade deadline anyways!

The big questions leading into Thursday’s deadlines are where are the potential destinations for the big names being dangled out there and are these stars really available? Dwight Howard, Carmelo Antony, Blake Griffin and Kevin Love  are the prizes this year, but there’s one problem: none of the teams who want these guys have the assets or draft picks to acquire the highly coveted names.

Most teams that are willing to unload a superstar are assessing whether or not who they are trading will re-sign with the team they are trading them to or whether they have a chance to sign their star player after the season if they retain them, which makes it the biggest gamble in professional sports as the NFL and NHL trade deadlines generally go very quiet, and while the MLB one has noise, it generally doesn’t lead to someone who changes the postseason.

But hey, at least the NFL Combine is next week
