MasterChugs Theater: ‘2011 Oscar Picks’

It’s that time of the year again (please note that this time is so much more different than that time of the month [well, most of the time]). That’s right kids, the Oscars are back! It’s been a while since we’ve done something like this before, so I felt it might be fun to take a crack at guessing who will win what. Now, mind you, just because I like movies does not mean that I have any idea what the winners will be. These are not locks. Hopefully, though, I’ll be able to predict the future.

Hit the jump to see the predictions.

Actor in a Supporting Role
Christian Bale, John Hawkes, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Geoffrey Rush

After seeing The Fighter, I would easily have gone with Bale. He’s absolutely amazing in the movie, despite not being the true focus of the movie; however, Geoffrey Rush in The King’s Speech is another individual just like Bale, not being the main focus of the film. Nonetheless, my gut says to go with Bale, if only because he not winning will result in another behind the scenes employee being berated.

Actress in a Leading Role
Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams

While people have raved about The Kids Are All Right, Natalie Portman is a shoe-in for her role in Black Swan as a crazy pseudo-lesbian ballet dancer. Which, in all honesty, if you ever needed a reason to see a movie focusing on ballet, make sure that that reason is a crazy pseudo-lesbian ballet dancer. That’s hot.

Documentary Feature
Exit Through the Gift Shop, Gasland, Inside Job, Restrepo, Wasteland

The Academy is stuffy enough to not give the Oscar to Exit simply because they’re terrified that doing so would besmirch the dignity of the show when Banksy shows up in a chicken outfit to co-accept the award. Little do they know that Banksy will probably do that anyways. My money’s on Inside Job, just because the global recession stuff still hurts just a teensy bit.

Writing (Adapated Screenplay)
127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter’s Bone

Remember how I said earlier in this that these picks were not locks? The Social Network is a lock to win. I’ll eat a hat if it doesn’t win.*

Best Picture
Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter’s Bone

And here we have the tough pick. Normally, there’s at least one movie that I can rail against, but I can’t this time, as I honestly (at the very least) like all of the choices here. I’d say that the best possibilities are The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right, The King’s Speech and The Social Network, and out of those … I’d go with The Fighter. Simply because I think the Academy wants the Oscar to go to an American film this time around.

*note: hat in question may consist of a bowl of grapes
